Natural Fibers Made from Coffee.
When it comes to fashion, the materials used to make our favorite pieces of clothing are endless! When I shop for clothing, I tend to fall in love with items that are nice to touch, and that I know would feel good on my body for everyday wear.
Through the use of modern technology, there are hundreds of new fibers being created that actually can help the environment. I did some research and stumbled across a new fiber made out of coffee. It's common for most people just throw away their coffee grinds, but a Taiwanese company (Singtex) decided to reuse them. The grinds are mixed with polyester and then spun into yarn. This fiber is said to be great for the outdoor and sportswear clothing industry.
Stop Animal Cruelty.
Ever since I was a little girl, I have been a HUGE lover of animals. My grandparents were born and raised on a farm in Jamaica, and every time I'd go visit, I would walk the goats, feed the pigs, and chase around the chickens. Animals are the way to my heart! To know that people raise and kill animals for their fur, does not sit well with me. Why should an animal be stripped for their fur, when there is such thing as faux fur? One may never know...
I do know that there are clothing brands that strive to be completely eco-friendly/cruelty-free, because of the backlash about the leather and fur industries. PETA is an animal rights organization that fights for what they believe is right. A clothing brand that they support, and that I love, is Reformation. Reformation is an on-trend clothing brand that makes and sells sustainable garments.
Say NO to Fast Fashion.
Whether people like it or not, fashion is a huge part of our everyday lives, starting with waking up and choosing what outfit you'd like to wear for that day. As a consumer, we don't think about where each piece of clothing is made or how it’s made on a daily basis. The clothing manufacturing industry has taken a toll on our environment and the safety/well-being of those making our clothing. It is important to take look at the bigger picture when we as consumers decide to purchase clothing made by the fast fashion industry.
As a society, we need to look at the bigger picture and figure out ways that we can save our environment. We don't need to abide by the social norms of buying new fast fashion products/garments to make ourselves happy on the inside. We don't need to go into a state of depression if these ideas aren't reached. What we need to do is make a change. Organizations like Fair Trade, work with manufacturers and fashion companies ensuring that there are fair wages, good working conditions and that the environment isn't being harmed during the process of making these garments. Sustainability is becoming a huge trend in companies and honestly should never go away. Don't give in to fast fashion, instead, you can help change the world by shopping sustainably and consciously.
